Signal vs noise in tech news

Why most technology headlines are noise, and a practical filter for finding the few stories that will actually matter in a year.

Technology news has a structural problem: there is far more of it than there is technology worth reporting. Every funding round, demo, benchmark, and executive quote becomes a headline, and the volume drowns the handful of stories that will still matter in a year. Reading tech news well is mostly about filtering — separating durable signal from disposable noise before it eats your attention.

Here is how this desk decides what to read closely and what to skip.

Noise announces. Signal ships.

The single most useful filter is whether something exists yet. A huge share of tech coverage is about things that have been announced — a model coming "later this year," a feature "rolling out soon," a partnership with no product attached. Announcements are cheap. They cost a press release and buy a news cycle.

Signal is different: it can be used, measured, or reproduced today. When you see a story, ask one question — can I touch this right now? If the answer is "no, it ships next quarter," file it under noise and move on. If it ships and the timeline slips, the slip is itself the story.

Distrust the round number and the single benchmark

Tech marketing loves a clean figure: "10x faster," "99% accurate," "50% cheaper." Round, dramatic numbers are almost always chosen for the headline, not for accuracy. Two questions defuse them:

  • Faster than what, measured how? A "10x faster" claim usually hides the baseline it beat and the specific test it won. Change the test and the multiple vanishes.
  • Who ran the benchmark? A vendor benchmarking its own product against a competitor is not evidence; it is advertising with a chart. Independent, reproducible tests are worth a hundred vendor slides.

The pattern to internalize: a real improvement comes with its methodology attached, because the people who did the work want you to be able to check it. A marketing number comes alone.

The hype cycle is predictable — use it

New technologies move through a familiar arc: a breakthrough, a wave of inflated expectations, a crash of disillusionment, and finally a slow climb to real, boring usefulness. Most coverage clusters at the two peaks — the "this changes everything" phase and the "it was all a bubble" phase — because those are the phases that generate clicks.

Both extremes are noise. The signal is in the quiet middle, where a few teams are shipping unglamorous things that work. If a technology is being called either the future of everything or a complete fraud, that is a sign the coverage is tracking sentiment, not substance. Wait for the boring stage; that is where the durable stories live.

Follow builders, not broadcasters

The best tech information rarely arrives as news. It arrives as a changelog, a postmortem, a GitHub issue, a conference talk from the engineer who actually built the thing. These sources have a different incentive: they are talking to peers who will catch exaggeration, so they tend to be precise about what works and honest about what does not.

A practical move: for any technology you care about, find two or three people who build with it and read them directly. One careful practitioner writing about their real experience is worth a week of aggregated headlines.

Watch what companies do with money, not what they say

Corporate statements are written to shape perception. Capital allocation is written to make money. When the two disagree, believe the money. A company that says it is "all in on X" while quietly cutting the X team is telling you the truth in its budget and a story in its blog post. Layoffs, acquisitions, hiring pages, and where the compute budget goes are far higher signal than any keynote.

A test for whether a story matters

Before you spend real attention on a tech story, run it through three questions:

  1. Does it exist yet, and can it be checked? Announcements and un-reproducible claims are noise by default.
  2. Will anyone remember it in a year? Most product launches and funding rounds fail this instantly. The stories that pass — a new default that quietly reshapes how software is built, a security failure with lasting consequences, a genuine shift in what is possible — are rare and worth your time.
  3. Is the source paid to make me believe it? Vendor, competitor, or independent? Point your skepticism at the incentive.

Apply this and the firehose shrinks to a trickle. That is the goal. The point of reading tech news critically is not to read more of it — it is to read almost none of it, and to be right about the small part you keep.
